Arsenal - Bayern Munich Betting Special: Ancelotti - 'Arsenal are out!'

Carlo Ancelotti has told Goal that the Gunners are "practically out" of the Champions League after losing their first two group games, and the odds seem to vindicate this view

After taking zero points from their opening two Group F fixtures, there is no doubt that Arsenal are up against it to reach the knockout stages.

With a double header against the mighty Bayern Munich next on the agenda, it seems difficult to argue with Carlo Ancelotti’s contention that the Gunners are “practically out.”

Six points off the top and three behind both Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb, Betway’s 5/2 (3.50) odds on Arsene Wenger’s men qualifying from the group seem arguably too short.

Ancelotti accused the Frenchman of “underestimating” his opponents in the group so far – a mistake he is not likely to make against Die Roten on Tuesday.

If they are to have any hopes of pulling off the great escape then they will surely have to take something from this clash, when they are 11/4 (3.75) outsiders to come out on top at the Emirates.

Such unusually long odds for a home game underline the task at hand for Arsenal, who will also need to hope that Dinamo and Olympiakos cancel each other out over their two meetings in order to leave the door open for a comeback.

Even a draw would leave the hosts with faint hopes of reaching the last 16, and their chances of achieving parity are rated at a somewhat slender 14/5 (3.80).

Having opened the season with 11 consecutive wins in the league and Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s side are understandable 10/11 (1.91) favourites to all but end their opponents’ chances of progression by taking maximum points.

Given the Germans’ all-conquering form, all signs point to them securing a third win in a row at a stadium where they have emerged victorious in each of the last two seasons.

Realistically, it would take a brave man to back those 5/2 (3.50) odds on Arsenal making it past the group stages, let alone the 40/1 (41.00) price on them going all the way and lifting the trophy.
